The Switch to NBN

Recently at Bright Solutions Electrical, we switched from our existing landline phone and ADSL internet to the new nbn service. In this month’s newsletter, we share with you our experience and take you through what to expect when the nbn rolls into your area.
Once the nbn network is complete in your area, existing landline phone and internet services will soon be disconnected. If you don’t want to be left without phone and internet, it is very important you start the process to switch to the nbn. Here are some steps that may make the switch easier.

Step 1. Check your address has been connected to the nbn

Check the nbn website. If your address has been connected, you are ready to switch.

Step 2. Choose a service provider

This may require research as this depends on your needs. Things to consider may include how you are using the internet and how fast you require your internet speed. If you require additional services such as a phone line (otherwise known as VOIP), you may need to find a service provider who is able to supply you with this.
There are many internet service providers to choose from and they are listed on the nbn website. At Bright Solutions, we found that talking to different service providers allowed us to compare products and choose a provider that best suited our business needs.

Step 3. Installation date request

Once you have chosen your internet service provider (ISP) they will issue a request to have an nbn technician come and install some necessary nbn equipment both outside (utility box) and inside (connection box) at your property. We were advised that this install date could be up to 28 days from when the request was sent.

Step 4. NBN connection box location

While waiting for your nbn technician to come, you will need to decide where you would like your nbn connection box to be installed inside the property. There are a few things to consider when picking the location as the connection box needs to be close to a power point, in a central location for good wi-fi coverage and in an area that is easy to check indicator lights.

Step 5. Additional Wiring may be needed

Consider if you require additional wiring done inside your property. At the Bright Solutions office, we needed the socket (where the nbn box would connect to) moved to a more central location. Stewart, our lead electrician, was able to move this socket for us easily and with minimal fuss.

Step 6. Installation Day

Once you have been notified of an installation day by the nbn technician, it is very important that someone over the age of 18 be at the property to sign and authorise the work to be performed. Our nbn technician took approximately half and hour to complete his installation.

Step 7. Congratulations- you are connected to the NBN!

Not only did Bright Solutions Electrical have a faster internet connection, we were able to keep our existing phone number!

Step 8. The Aftermath

After a while you may find that the nbn connection box and your modem may not be in the most convenient location. Bright Solutions are able to assist and move this connection point to a position that best suits you.
