Electrical Safety During Storms
Storms are a part of life in the Queensland summer and over the last week we have seen some impressive storm action. This month, we share with you our Top 5 Electrical Safety Tips to help you keep electrically safe during the storm season.
1. Check Your Safety Switches

2. Consider Surge Protection
Installing a device called a surge protector can save you thousand of dollars in replacing of your electrical items because of a storm. Surge protectors are designed specifically to protect your electrical devices and appliances from a voltage spike cause by lightning, brownout and other power surges.
3. Unplug all Electrical Devices and Appliances
Before a storm hits, it is important to turn off and unplug all electrical equipment from the wall. Electrical equipment such as computers, TV’s, cooking ranges, reticulation systems and pool equipment feature sensitive electronic components and may be affected by power surges during the storm or when power is restored. It is also a good idea to disconnect the telephone and any antennas or aerials to avoid electricity conduction.
4. Stay Away from Fallen Powerlines
Storms, strong winds and falling trees can cause powerlines and other electric wires to be torn down. A fallen powerline or any other exposed electrical wire should always be considered live and is extremely dangerous. Stay well clear of these. Fallen trees near powerlines are dangerous as they may be covering an exposed powerline and can be a potential conductor of electricity.
5. Call an Electrician to Help
If your home’s electrical system or electrical appliances have suffered from storm damage, always call a qualified electrician to help. To ensure you are kept safe, do not attempt any electrical repairs yourself and do not use any electrical appliances, including lights and fans that have been exposed, damaged or submerged in water.
